Crooked Tree Village: Things to Do and See

Crooked Tree Village: Things to Do and See

After a 40 minute drive up the Philip Goldson Highway, a gentle left turn down an unassuming road leads to a small village teeming with culture and biodiversity. Crooked Tree Village is the home of Cashew Fest, but there’s also much more to this tiny Kriol village. Established all the way back in the 1700s by colonial settlers, Crooked Tree today is a beloved and off the beaten path destination for birders, cashew wine lovers, and Belizean Travellers from all over. Here are some of the top things to do and see when visiting.

The Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

Made up of 16,400 sprawling acres of protected wetlands, the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary boasts Belizean biodiversity at its finest, particularly when it comes to birds. In addition to being home to the famed Jabiru Stork, the sanctuary, managed by the Belize Audubon Society, is comprised of lagoons, forests, marshes, and savanna grasslands. Its diverse makeup means it’s a perfect spot for birding.

The Annual Cashew Fest and Agriculture Show

Every year, fans of cashew in all its forms flock to Crooked Tree to attend the annual Cashew Fest. Held every year in May, this popular Belizean festival has evolved over the years into a multi-day celebration, complete with games, competitions, live music, and of course plenty of fiyah haat food and delicious drinks (cashew wine included). Spend a day or spend the entire weekend. Regardless, Cashew Fest is a must-attend.

Kick Back, Relax, and Enjoy Village Life

While there isn’t as much to do in Crooked Tree as larger villages and towns, for many the village may offer a much-welcomed change of pace from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Check in at a local lodge or hotel and immerse yourself in the tranquility of it all. Visit the Crooked Tree Museum, pick some cashews and mangoes at Good News Garden, or simply relax and lean into village life. Just don’t forget to take home some cashew nuts and wine when you leave!
