Best Ways to Celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day 2025

On November 19th, communities across Belize will come together in commemoration of the 1823 arrival of the Garinagu to the country’s shores. But it’s no secret that Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations usually extend far beyond the actual date of the holiday. Over the past few decades, the entire month of November in Belize has grown to be synonymous with the rich culture and vibrant traditions that the Garifuna people have strived to preserve even in the face of adversity. Want in on the festivities? Here are some of the best ways to celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day 2025.

Get to Know the Garifuna Settlement Day 2025 Theme

Every year, the National Garifuna Council announces the theme under which the Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations will be held. This year, the theme aims to honor the enduring legacy and spirit of Belize’s Garifuna people. Get acquainted with the theme and then try your hand at learning the Garifuna translation:

“Garifuna Moving Forward: Honoring Tradition, Embracing Change, Strengthening Identity.”

“Garifuna: Wabaronguóun lidan Garifunaduáü: iúnrahei warasan, agahabuda lun sánsiguaü, inebesei lun wanichigu.”

Head to Punta Gorda for Battle of the Drums

While Belize’s southernmost town isn’t as renowned as Dangriga or Hopkins when it comes to traditional celebrations, it is currently the host town for one of the biggest November events. The annual Battle of the Drums competition will see some of the country’s top bands and drumming groups go head-to-head for a chance at the title of champion. Spanning multiple days, the event also features a “Food & Fete” dinner and a High School edition of Battle of the Drums.

Watch the Yurumein

At dawn on Garifuna Settlement Day, join countless spectators and watch the live reenactment of the arrival known as the Yurumein. Taking place in Seine Bight, Dangriga, and even in Belize City, the reenactment features members of the community arriving to the shores in small boats as they sing and drum. What usually follows after is a grand parade through the streets and finally a Garifuna Settlement Day mass.

Celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day With Food

From hudut and sere to sahou and darasa, there are plenty of delicious Garifuna meals, treats, and drinks to be sampled, especially in the month of November. And what better way to get immersed in a culture than through food?
